Where to ride first

Six cities that read better from a saddle than a seat.

A canal grid built for bikes, two riverbanks with the traffic taken off them, a hill city with motors for hire, and an old town small enough to lap twice before lunch. Six places to start, and the best ride in each.

Spain

Spain rides early, eats late, and flattens out by the sea.

★★★★★★★★★★4.5· 3,009 reviews on the country’s most popular ride

Barcelona to the beach, the dry riverbed that crosses Valencia end to end, Seville laid out for bikes years before anywhere else in Europe. Start before nine and the cities belong to you.

The city loop

Three hours, old town to sand

3 hours· small group· bike provided

Gothic quarter, the market, then out along the front. Enough stops that nobody arrives sweating, and short enough to leave the afternoon alone.

The assisted one

When the old town is on a hill

2–3 hours· pedal assist· helmets included

Granada, Malaga and the Valencian back country stop being a climb and start being a view. Worth the extra ten euros on any city with a castle above it.

The long flat

Sea wall, all afternoon

Half a day· flat· hire included

The Mediterranean promenades run for miles without a junction. Take a hire bike, a swimsuit and no plan beyond lunch somewhere along it.

Out of town

Past the ring road the riding goes quiet.

An hour from most European capitals the traffic stops and the lanes turn into farm tracks, vineyard rows and canal banks. This is where the day gets long, lunch matters, and the bike stops being transport.

Italy

Italy is a hill problem with an electric answer.

Rome is seven hills and two thousand years of paving. Florence sits in a bowl. Tuscany is all gradient. The e-bike turned every one of those from a reason not to ride into the reason to, and Italy now has more assisted tours than anywhere else on this site.

American riding

Five ways to ride the States, from a park loop to a canyon.

American riding splits cleanly: a city with a rental desk on the corner, a park with its own road, or a landscape big enough that somebody drives you to the start. Here is what each one costs to get on.

Cost of a ride

What a day in the saddle actually costs.

Every ride here, grouped by the price on the door. A guided morning costs less than most museum tickets; hiring the bike yourself costs less than lunch.

Under $50

Day hire, city loops of two or three hours, and the guided morning rides that most trips are built on.

$50–150

Full days with lunch, assisted tours on hill cities, and the countryside runs that need a van out and a ride back.

$150 and up

Private guides, palace grounds with a picnic, and the desert and canyon days that come with a shuttle.

Only from a saddle

Three rides that make no sense any other way.

Plenty of places look fine through a coach window. A city where the bike outnumbers the car, a Roman road closed to traffic, and a limestone valley you pedal across and then row through do not.

Amsterdam

The city where the bike is the traffic

Amsterdam has more bicycles than residents and built the road layout around that fact, so the lanes are wide, kerbed off, and given priority at junctions. Riding here is not an activity bolted onto a city break; it is simply how the city moves, and a guided loop mostly teaches you the etiquette so you can carry on alone the next day.

Rome

Two thousand years of paving, no cars on it

The Appian Way still carries its original basalt slabs, laid in the fourth century BC and closed to traffic on Sundays along the stretch that matters. You ride between tombs, aqueduct arches and catacomb entrances on a surface that rattles every bolt you own, which is exactly why people remember it.

Ninh Binh

Pedal between the karsts, then let somebody row

The limestone towers north of Hanoi rise straight out of flooded rice fields, and the lanes between them are dead flat and barely wide enough for a car. The standard day pairs an hour or two in the saddle with a sampan through the cave tunnels at Tam Coc, rowed by foot, which is a thing you will want to see whatever you came for.

Book ahead

Four rides that are gone before you land.

Most rides here can be arranged the night before. These four run on palace entry slots, ferry timetables, seasonal shuttles and a fleet of bikes small enough to run out.

  1. 01Versailles Palace Bike Tour with Market & Marie-Antoinette hamletPalace entry is a timed slot and the bike is a separate fleet. Both have to line up, and the morning ones go first.
  2. 02Rottnest Island Full-Day Bike and Ferry TripThe bikes cross on the ferry with you and the sailings are fixed. Miss the booking and the island is a walk.
  3. 03Red Rock Canyon eBike Half-Day TourThe canyon road runs a one-way loop with a shuttle window either side of it. Outside that window there is no ride.
  4. 04Hidden Kyoto E-Biking tourSmall group, small fleet, and the whole city is on the same three weeks of blossom or maple. It sells out early.
Gradient and gears

How hard is it? Ask the hills, not the distance.

Fifteen kilometres across Amsterdam is an easy morning. The same fifteen across Lisbon is a different sport. Gradient, surface and stopping frequency decide whether a ride is a holiday or a workout, and a motor cancels most of the argument. Assisted tours suit anybody who can ride a bike at all; self-guided hire suits people who would rather stop when they feel like it.

Pedal assist

The motor did not ruin cycling. It opened up the hills.

A third of the tours here now run on assisted bikes, and they are the reason Lisbon, Rome and Granada are rideable at all. You still pedal; the hill just stops being the thing you think about. Three to start with, then the countries doing it best.
