Cycle to the Sea takes you downhill from Haleakala through Makawao and toward the Maui coast in about five hours. Start at Makena Bay near Kihei for a 1-hour-45-minute small-group ride on your own water bike. Guides such as Aukai and Kahili explain Hawaiian place names, culture, and coastal life as you pedal past reefs and a rare black sand beach. Bikes are stable and easy to steer, but bring sunscreen and a hat.

Start at 6,500 feet outside Haleakala National Park, then coast downhill on a Kona mountain bike with a helmet, wind gear, and shuttle support. Guides such as Kimo, Dan, Tim, and Nico add local stories on the drive. You will ride the famous switchbacks, pass through Makawao, and finish in Haiku with time for lunch on your own.
“Because of local rule changes the actual bike riding is only two 15 minute repeat loops. Tim did a nice job with tour to cover short ride but this was bike ride!! Also driver left first, instead of trailing bikers, one rider crashed with bloody injuries and had to ride down to van/trailer to get first aid???”
Start before dawn at 810 Haiku Road, ride by shuttle to Haleakala’s summit for sunrise, then bike downhill from 6,500 feet through the famous Fabulous 29 switchbacks. “This was my favorite experience of our trip. Biking down a volcano was a great experience and Haleakala was beautiful. Would recommend packing some snacks, stopped for a brief breakfast time but did not feel like we had adequate time to eat. Other than that it was great.”
Start at 2:45 am for Haleakala sunrise, then ride from about 6,500 feet down 29 switchbacks on a chrome cruiser bike. Mountain Riders uses small groups of up to 12, with guides such as Joe, Nani, Abe, and Everett helping manage the pace. Expect fierce cold at the summit, two downhill runs, and a stop in Makawao.
